Engana was formed in September 2001 to supply module and subsystem solutions for next generation optical networks. Engana successfully closed a first round of VC funding in December 2002 with investors including DB Capital, TVP, Intel and Rikei. It is now located in the Australian Technology Park at Eveleigh. Engana was acquired by Optium Corporation in March 2006 and subsequently listed on NASDAQ in October 2006, valued at $US480.3 million ($625 million).

Dr Simon Poole - GM Optium Australia and Vice President of Business Development, Optium Corporation

Dr Simon Poole has 25 years experience in photonics in both academia and industry. He obtained his PhD in Optical Fibres in 1987 and was a member of the team that invented the Erbium-Doped Fibre Amplifier - one of the key building blocks of optical communication systems. In 1988 he moved to Australia to found the Optical Fibre Technology Centre at the University of Sydney and in 1991 co-founded the Australian Photonics CRC.

In October 1995 he started Indx Pty Ltd to manufacture Fibre Bragg Gratings (FBGs) for the optical communications systems market. Dr Poole was CEO of Indx through its acquisition by JDS Uniphase in 1997 and after the initial integration into Uniphase, he became the Technical Director of what turned into JDSU Australia which grew to a peak revenue of $100mpa in 2001.

Dr Poole left JDSU in January 2001 and, after a period as a Venture Partner with KPLJ Ventures in Menlo Park, he co-founded, and was CEO of, another start-up, Engana Pty Ltd which was acquired by Optium Corporation in 2006. He is now General Manager of Optium Australia (the renamed Engana) as well as VP Business Development for Optium Corporation. As a successful 'serial entrepreneur', Simon brings considerable experience and understanding of the entrepreneurial process.

Neil Bourne - Formerly Technology Venture Partners (TVP)

Neil Bourne has 15 years of business experience in the IT industry, including 5 years in venture capital and 3 years in management consulting. He was instrumental in facilitating the syndicated Series A (or first round) deal and TVP's investment in Engana.

Karl Rodrigues - Formerly Intel Capital

Karl Rodrigues is the MD of Adventia Group Pty Limited. Prior to founding Adventia, Karl was with Intel Capital. In that capacity, he reviewed hundreds of business plans, and invested in many Australian and New Zealand companies, including Engana with successful exits on NASDAQ and AIM. Karl has a deep technology and commercialisation background through Software Engineering and Research and Development in many areas including distributed systems, high transaction systems, data security, eCommerce and wireless technologies; and across many verticals including telecommunications, banking and finance, gaming and wagering, health and manufacturing. He has international experience in both start-ups and large multinational organisations.

He is currently a director or advisor on a number of technology start-ups.
